about

In 2006, the Bent Spoon Trio was at the height of its anything-goes stage. Their core instruments were still largely alto sax, upright bass, and drumset, playing in a sort of free jazz/free improv style.

Around this time, Munro revealed his trombone prowess and added various pedals & electronic enhancements to his upright; Laing began adding his homemade devices, started experimenting with the melodica, and tried his hand at some random percussive interjections; and Dadge, he received a flea-market-clarinet and started messing with tapes & contact mics.

This session was recorded in parts, during a day-long session at Artunit studios, which was owned by Dan Grisdale, who makes an appearance on a couple tracks. (Jay Crocker, along with Dadge and Munro, also recorded a ton of stuff here over a few-year period around here.) These tracks were intended to be used as a collaborative-via-mail-album, but the project never materialized, and the resulting tracks, while occasionally quite stark, are a good representation of the types of things this group was working on in this era. The hard editing is an appealing post-production choice that is a recurring device in Bug Incision releases. It was also around this time that this technique appeared, having been exposed to various FMP releases featuring radical edits.
